WGI World Champions!

The Pacifica Mariners take home yet another title this weekend becoming the WGI Open Class world champions for the 4th time in a row!  While the gold medal was the crowning achievement, the trip was rewarding on many levels.  The group performed at an exhibition show held at Centerville High School in Ohio on Thursday.  The show is referred to as a World Championships preview and it included some of the top groups that made the trip.  The students also enjoyed cheering on Los Alamitos as they made their Finals appearance in what would be the winning PSA division performance.

Special thanks to Lori Airhart, our drumline representative for planning the trip and for Maria Burciaga for her assistance.  Others that made this trip possible were Chuck and Rhonda Johnston.  Dale Gilbert, Rose Guzman, Loueen Pritchett, George Shearer and Dan Ma.

Of course, Pacifica could not have reached this goal without our coaches, John Mapes and Ian Grom or their assistants, Paul and Yumi.  Such an amazing set of coaches for such an amazing group of performers.

Congratulations and Thank You to all for a successful 2009 Dayton trip!

Drumline Fees and Dayton trip costs

The boosters thanks everyone who came through this past weekend to catch up on money owed to the program.  It is great to see so many parents taking the issue of program fees and trip costs seriously.  A few years ago the Ayala drumline program produced a video of their 2005 season.  Please take a few minutes to view the following video.

Sport of the Arts - Part 1

Sport of the Arts - Part 2

While this is about Ayala, it could just as easily be about our program.  The budget for our program is distributed each month at our general booster meetings.  Questions are welcome.  Those that have viewed the budget know there are no hidden or frivolous expenses in our budget.  Every dollar counts. When one member is not current on their fees, it puts the entire program at risk.

Please take this matter seriously and contact Mr. Miller, if you need to make special arrangements due to financial hardship.

General information for Drumline Parents

click here for complete drumline information packet

  • There are weekly rehearsals every Tuesday from 5:30 to 9:00 and Wednesday from 3:00 to 6:00.  Additional rehearsals are added according to the school schedule and as required to finish or refine the show.  While our coach, John Mapes, does try to end rehearsals on time, they do often run longer than scheduled due to a variety of factors.  Please be patient as it does take time.

  • The above competition schedule may change.  However, it is a good idea to plan around this schedule now.  The students will not be available for any part of the day on show days either due to travel time required for the venue or morning rehearsals before the show.

  • Students are not transported in buses to competition sites.  They are transported by parent volunteers.  If you wish to be a driver, please contact a booster member or Lori Airhart (gairhart@yahoo.com), our drumline representative, to let her know.

  • Meals are paid for by each student on the day of the competition and will cost $7.00 for each student and parent that will be having a meal at the site.  The booster parents do a good job finding a nice meal for this price.  Please be sure your student has money for these meals.  You may wish to provide them with a little additional money at your discretion as there are t-shirts and other items available for purchase at the shows.

  • Finals competition is in Dayton, Ohio.  See above for more details on this very important trip.

  • Uniforms are custom made each season.  The first deposit for uniforms is generally $100 and due in in early January with the balance will due prior to the first competition, either in late January or early February.  Please budget accordingly.  Students get to keep this uniform when the season is over.

Attention Drumline Parents and Fans

Vic Firth, a Pacifica High School sponsor for sticks and mallets, have posted a few videos you may be interested in watching.  First is the excellent interview with John and Ian where they talk about the activity, the art form, writing music and a little bit of history.  There is footage of Pacifica High School along with Fountain Valley, Chino Hills and Los Alamitos.  In addition, there are two video features of Pacifica High School warming up in the lot in Dayton, Ohio as well as several photographs from the competitions.

Be sure to check these out at VicFirth.com or click here to go directly to the WGI page with links to all of the excellent content.

Pacifica High School Drumline thanks Vic Firth for their support!
